New Jersey State Auto Insurance Requirements

Q: "What is the minimum amount of auto insurance I need in New Jersey?"

New Jersey state law requires Bodily Injury Liability limits of $15,000 minimum per injured person, and up to a total of $30,000 per accident, and Property Damage Liability coverage with a minimum of $5,000 in coverage. In addition to this required coverage, New Jersey, a choice No-Fault state, requires drivers to carry Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist (UM) Bodily Injury Liability coverage of $25,000/$50,000. Choice No-Fault means you can choose to use the No-Fault system where insurance companies must pay for damages up to a certain amount regardless of fault, or, you can use the standard tort method.

New Jersey Coverage: 15/30/5

Basic Policy
Property Damage Liability: $5,000 Limit
Personal Injury Protection: $15,000 Limit

Standard Policy
Bodily Injury Liability: $15,000/$30,000 Limit
Property Damage Liability: $5,000 Limit
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury: $15,000/$30,000 Limit
Uninsured Motorist Property Damage: $5,000 Limit
Personal Injury Protection: $15,000 Limit
*Both Basic and Standard Policies include $250,000 PIP limit for permanent or significant injury.

Although 15/30/5 is the minimum requirement for auto insurance in New Jersey, that may not be enough coverage to properly take care of damge, injury, or valuable assets. Finding the right amount of coverage is necessary to insure that you, your family and your assets will be covered in the case of damages from an automobile accident.
